Southern California Locals

Gray Whale

On February 3rd, 2021 I had the most incredible encounter of my life. A Gray Whale decided to stop in for a snack during our dive at the La Jolla Shores canyon. Gray whales migrate south every year on their way to warmer waters and birthing grounds in Mexico. They are often seen not far from the coastline. Check out the news article about the experience below.

Tope Sharks

Tope sharks come to La Jolla Shores to give birth in large numbers every few years. A local from San Diego conducted a study about Tope Sharks with Scripps UCSD and as a result, they were added to the endangered species list. Check it out in the link below.  Last summer I got to experience the Tope Sharks in mass. Some referred to it as the topenado. These videos were taken in about 10 feet of water. I set up my tripod and let it record while I floated above watching these glorious sharks! I spent hours in the water that weekend.

Harbor Seals

In January 2020 we hopped on Spectre Dive Boat to the Channel Islands. It was in the kelp forest of Santa Cruz Island that I met the friendliest Harbor Seal. The below video is of the seal and I.

7 Gill Sharks

7 Gill Sharks come from deep waters into the shallower waters around San Diego in the Spring. I saw these two in Point Loma. It is always an honor getting a visit from a local celebrity.

Leopard Sharks

Every summer Leopard Sharks come to La Jolla Shores to give birth. They stay all summer long and sometimes linger into fall. They hang out in the shallows near the Shores and the Marine Room area. These are my all-time favorite sharks. I love their patterns and each one is unique to the individual.

A Seal Birth

Every pupping season the Children's Pool in La Jolla is closed to humans so that mamma seals have a safe place to give birth and raise their pups. I stopped by one day when conditions did not permit diving and was not disappointed. I got to witness a seal birth. If you ever decide to visit the seals, please do not approach and give them their space. If you scare a mamma they can abandon their pups.
